Case Studies - External Wall Insulation, Coalville

The back story

Michael and Denise had been friends for some time, their relationship blossoming through a shared interest in amateur radio. After some time living together they were looking for a lifestyle change that fitted their budget for retirement, and allowed them to care for Denise’s mother who suffered from ill health.

The couple spent time visiting park sites with a number of things in mind. They wanted to go back to a way of living like the 1960’s, a community spirit where people look out for each other. Security was a key deciding factor, as well as a peaceful site where they wouldn’t be bothered. They found Moorlands Park, and Michael immediately hit it off with park manager Malcolm, soon after they bought their first park home.

Moorlands is a small site, peaceful and gated for security – all of thing things Michael and Denise were looking for. The park home itself was in need of some TLC. The roof and floor were in good condition, however the walls hadn’t been insulated, so Michael contacted us for some advice.

The work

Sam, our Park Home Surveyor, visited Michael taking with him some samples of our 6 layer system to demonstrate how it works.

Sam was very friendly and knowledgeable and reassured me that Black Box would do a great job.

There were a few issues to overcome i.e. a redundant boiler flue needed cutting and covering at the side of the home, the vents to the soffits needed to be left visible and some trim needed colour matching. The whole process spanned three days in total.

The team were extremely tidy and conscientious workers, leaving the property cleaner than it was when they arrived, even sweeping up the leaves that had blown down!

The result

Interestingly Michael carried out an experiment before and after the external wall insulation. The night before the install went in there was a frost and the overnight temperature fell by 12 degrees, the next night, after only the first layer of boards and render had been installed this drop halved to just 6 degrees.

Since completion Michael and Denise have noticed that their park home’s temperature is sustained for longer, meaning they don’t have to put their heating on so often. In addition, behind their home is a road and they have noticed a big reduction in the noise from passing vehicles, now muffled by the 2 ¾ inch layer of insulation.

Michael and Denise are very happy with their new park home life, and they have made some lifelong friends. Park manager Malcolm was even best man at their wedding!
